SOLAR FIRE TRIO

The Grapes, Sheffield. August 11th 2006.
plus Little Miss Machete / Eaten by Children vs. Moodi

PLAY
(10 mins / 21mb)

Solar Fire Trio are a free improv trio whose influences are as much jazz as they are heavy rock. Tonight they played a blinding 42 minute Coleman meets Iggy set consisting of no breaks.. Two saxes (tenor and alto) and drums one may imagine there's not a lot that could be done beyond the obvious but you'd be wrong as in fact this was a set that demonstrated huge potential and a vast range of influences and flavours. Although not easy listening to begin with for the mixed crowd of freenoisers and young rockers (who'd come to see LMM, the majority of which hung out predictably in the bar downstairs), those that braved out the first few minutes, challenging one's own mental preconditions, were rewarded by an extremely thorough set that was as much cerebral as it was physical, as much chaotic, fiery intensity as it was lyrical and as much unpredictable as it was utterly digestable. Improv in its finest form, these men are masters of their trade; their strength as individuals equally contributing to the power and focus of the overall synergy in an interplay that seemed at times to be extremely well rehearsed rather than the slick interplay and communication that it was. You had to be there. Catch SFT live if you can, if you fancy something a bit different. Fans of punk, hard rock, free jazz and even harsh noise will not be disappointed. Check out the video for a taster. Top stuff. " Spontaneous riffs... broken harmonies... crashing rhythms... breathless screams... torn melody... free of constraint."

Eaten By Children was joined by Moodi for the opener tonight and the duo performed a head to head freeform electronic circus with a large array of consoles, pedals and wire. Starting with an unsettling mass of frequency bursts the duo, previously uncollaborated, soon whipped up a storm of massive dirty rhythms, busted feedback and sonic abuse ending in a literal attacking of their gear!

Little Miss Machete are the pride of Sheffield's hard rock scene, not exactly a Freenoise act but we were pleased to have them on to deliver their popular (they nearly filled the room for us so we all benefitted) harsh rock. The crowd were well up for it and the room reached fever pitch when, after a loud and perfectly sound, rock solid instrumental set, a new singer was announced and for the last two tracks wood the crowd with some postively cerrazy stage antics...!
