Hotsnack. Live, The Lescar, Sheffield. 17 Dec 2005 - pics [...]
For those
of you not in the know, Hotsnack is fronted by Brian and Heather of the above
(Acolytes Action Squad) and seems to be the 'main band' of the multi faceted
group, who have appeared in at least three other incarnations to my knowledge.
Aaah, Hotsnack! What a refreshing show. I first saw them at a Sheffield Independent
Film do when, by the time they came on due to the unlimited free booze faced
an audience of drunken shouting (talking) but finding myself on the partly vacant
front row of chairs was great! No, last night they didn't fail to please the
jam packed room of drunks and smokers either. Appearing in resplendent costumes
and masks the band was evidently well rehearsed and proceeded to entertain with
their irreverent brand of comedy
huh? Hold on. Scrub that, I think I picked
up a writing ghost from a previous Comedy Club. Hmm. Well sod it, I love their
stuff, especially when the beat picks up
I can't describe it and wish I'd
filmed it. Relying on an old tape walkman was a mistake and I was well peeved
climbing into bed with my headphones on to find I'd wiped over an old Keith
Jarrett tape with faint sounds of people
shouting. Beats me why folk pay
£4 to see something then insist on yapping, mind you a lot of them were
probably complaining they couldn't see as it's a shit venue which feels a bit
like being on a crowded bus with less seats. Benjamin Wetherill supporting with
his ukulele sat on a floor stool (with an empty stage behind him) so out of
120 people about a dozen could actually see. Oh shut up complaining. I got to
the front for Hotsnack and that's what counts. I don't make notes, I try not
to pretend I can write reviews and I enjoyed the music too much to be actually
thinking in words. Ok, here's a few: Gong... Sun Ra... Zappa... punk...original,
free jazz, scrummy, mushrooms
tomatoes
