Fursaxa. Lantern Theatre, Sheffield. 27 Nov 05 (A Harmonic Rooms Event).
Wow! Pretty
Folky Transcendental Hippy Mexican Red Indian Lassie from West Philadelphia
performs in Nether Edge! In this case the old red curtains were open for a timeless
space of forty minutes (after being warmed up by label mates Alec K Redfearn
and Sharron Kraus). Live overdubbed loops of her own acoustic sounds sometimes
up to 6 or 7 layers deep, gorgeously scary voice repeating abstract (?) mantras
and drones. Psychedelic, warm, melancholic and meditative, at times a little
innocent (lo-fi?) yet the pure intent won over. Like an innocent yet wise angel
of the age, shaman's bells stick, whistles, a small keyboard perched atop a
tiered corner shelf and a nifty effects pedal are her only physical props. That
is unless you count the wicker rocking chair, which one can easily imagine Tara
Burke (real name) settling back into after we'd all gone, to commune with the
angels and djinn she'd most definitely just invited into the magic lantern theatre.
Yes the venue was certainly appropriate, and even though only half full, while
most of the town paid homage in the temple of TV crap etc, this young lady created
a powerful and intimate event; entranced and hypnotised us, the chosen few;
led us willingly on into dreamtime. Thank God for individual artists (and individuals)
who are seemingly unphased by the shizoid 21st century. Like a travelling player,
recently described by one music website as 'darling of the Other Music set'
(she has been produced by Acid Mothers Temple and just released a new CD on
ATP), Fursaxa floated into our small world for a brief moment, reminding us
with beautifully described stories, of realities well beyond our own.
