Stuntcock
vs The Sontaran Experiment: When I heard you were dying'. (Futurenoise
Recordings FUN003)
Stuntcock (Catten) tracks 1-8 are nihilist laptop abrasiveness
with funny titles like 'Duet for Theremin' (vague theremin samples
totally screwed up by Audiomulch or something. Minimal yet full
on and suitably nasty. The track by The Sontaran Experiment
is superior as its more visceral with real instruments on top
of the electronic noise and even some doom metal attack opening
into decent Sabbathy grandiose hard-on rock-opera that could
do with some screamed vocals - I wrote that before they came
in, and hear they come - very nice too. This epic (18mins) track
is something to be proud of and I bet they're pretty good live
in a big dark club. Stuntcock are part of the Manchester doom
metal scene and Futurenoise's sub-heading is 'Volume Over Profit',
presumably sound volume not releases. Well done to Dave who
hassled me into making sure he got a review; take heed minions!

'PING'. Triple Bath CD-R (trb.001) Ltd.96. Release Nov '06
Recorded in Athens, Greece
and Stratford, Ontario.
Nicely
packaged CD-R (except for no ID on disc). Excellent quality
textural washes which build and resonate subtly, often unnoticeably
into great storm surges. Constantly evolving and mutating, evoking
images of Mythopoeikon style, sci-fi jungle scapes on distant
planets. Total production quality. Extremely compelling and
captivating stuff. Warning: my mp3 player couldn't see it (it's
a Philips) due to the '(((' in the artist title.
Sleeve notes: Steve Burr, composing electronic music
since 1989, has become a sturdy voice in the Canadian underground
scene. Via analog / hybrid equipment combined with a laptop,
he makes droney, ambient and dark, spacey soundscapes. Ping
is a three part live improvisation which evokees megalithic
instincts surrounded by an ever-dispersal toxic aura.
Note:
Both this and trb.001 (below) are only 5€ inc. post direct
from the label.

'Melancholia I'
Superb
ultra bass / dark ambient noise demo release from this promising
group. The overall atmosphere is of a terribly desparing and
bleak landscape, with hints of an early, dirty wartime. Add
the odd mythical creature or two and a sonic dash of Khanate
meets Cushing and you've got this excellent production which
my speakers are getting all sweaty over. The ending too has
some extra suprises which threw me right off kilter. Do yourself
a favour and download the whole terrifying number now. What's
more you get the artwork too - how's that for free noise?
